Images :Boryslav Kuzmenko

Surrounded by many upscale hotels, Nusa Dua is a paradise in its own way, Rich with lush flowers, plants and trees, this beach is also completed with wild mangroves, fragrant trees and orchids amidst clear blue ocean and rolling golden sand. If you are a swimmer, this is just the place for you as the currents and waves are quite friendly. Snorkeling will be fruitful as the water is absolutely crystal clear. If you are looking to surf, go to the south or north part for a more fun and challenging waves.

2. KUTA BEACH

One of the most popular beaches in Bali is the Kuta beach. It is especially famous for its higher and stronger currents, which is why surfers are almost everywhere as far as the eye can see when you are at the Kuta beach. This creates a chill vibe and energy of social community, which makes it special and entertaining in its own way. Drink and party are a part of Kuta Beach in its many bars and beach clubs. One being the Hard Rock Cafe Bali which is a must if you are looking for a fun night out

3. SANUR BEACH

Head on to south of Bali to visit Sanur beach. Its long stretch of golden sand is further highlighted by the presence of small corals along the way. This makes it a sought after place for those who fancy a walk on a beautiful beach while collecting sea shells for remembrance. The waves are calm and welcoming for swimmers. The clear blue sea will offer you clear glimpse of sea creatures such as starfish or sea turtles. Definitely a place for all to enjoy.

4. BALANGAN BEACH

Still on the least of the least explored beaches in Bali, there are only few visitors from the mainstream tour groups. This makes it perfect for those who are looking for a secret hideaway or privacy. The location of this beach is just across Uluwatu, where local villages will go about their daily activities in the villages. However, Balangan is not quite suitable for swimming because the currents can be rather strong with high waves. When the tide is low, you will enjoy a nice stroll while the waves caress your feet.

5. GEGER BEACH

With its idyllic white sand that glimmers under the sun and calmer sea, Geger Beach is another perfect beach for almost anyone. Located from the highway on the way to Nusa Dua, this beach is also famous for its lively seaweed farming activity. With plenty of cafes around the coastal area, you can enjoy having all types of meal with your loved ones or even a drink or two. Do watch out for stronger waves at night time, instead, take a long stroll up to the temple at the end of the beach.

6. BIAS TUGAL (TUGEL) BEACH

Locals nickname this as Pantai Kecil or little beach, while the travelers call it the white sand beach and it still remains as one of the best hidden beach in Bali. Tucked away near Padangbai, Tugel Beach is quite remote and can only be reached after a 500 metre trek down a rocky pathway. The effort needed will worth your while as you arrive to the sight of endless stretch of white sand and sparkling crystal sea water complete with the majestic coconut trees. It’s best for lounging and sun-tanning as the currents are strong and not exactly suitable for beginner swimmers.

7. PADANG-PADANG BEACH

Adjacent to Uluwatu temple, Padang Padang is a stunning beach surrounded with big rocks and overgrown plants. You will have to pass through the narrow passage downwards and do pay attention to the steep steps leading to this hidden location. Huge rocks and small caves make it ideal for exploration with a short swim across the distance. Just watch out for sharp corals and sea urchins underneath. It is also the shooting place for the famous Eat, Pray, Love so the charm and beauty is obvious in here.

8. LOVINA BEACH

Located in the north of Bali, Lovina is a black sandy beach that was once the spilled cool lava from the Mount Agung. Low waves and calm sea dominate the ocean making it a haven for swimmers. It is also quite peaceful and is yet to be overcrowded by pack of tourists, so for those looking for tranquil or solitary moments, this is just the beach for you. Don’t miss out on its sunrise where dolphins are often seen playing at Lovina sea.

9. NYANG NYANG BEACH

Located at Nusa Dua, this is yet another secret beach in Bali. You will have to make an uphill climb and then downhill to a street passing through a small forest to finally get there. It also boasts a local seaweed harvesting activity by the locals. With white sandy beach and crystal clear blue sea, swimming is especially a delight during low tide. However, with the effort needed to reach it and the slippery moss-filled steps, this will not be the ideal place for children. For adults, you will need to prepare insects repellent to protect you during the walk in the forest

10. DREAM BEACH IN NUSA LEMBONGAN

Just 7 km out of Bali’s sea lies a small island called Lembongan with its famous Dream Beach. Serenity and tranquility is its main feature where the waves from sea lap on long sandy beach. Filled with big rocks and small vegetation, travellers will have the best time exploring the surrounding area. Nusa Lembongan is yet to be developed fully which is a plus because the authenticity and natural aspects will shine throughout your journey.

In addition to its famous places, Bali also holds the wonder of unique beauty that is peculiar and strange at the same time magnificent. If you are looking to break away from the usual and common ways of vacationing such as five-star accommodation or mainstream beaches, you may be in for a wonderful surprise. We have the all-ins to what are still considered as hidden and off the tracks destinations in Bali for you to discover.

So gather your adventurous wits and let’s explore the many mysteries the island still has to offer.

1. TAMAN FESTIVAL BALI ‘GHOST TOWN’

Right on Padanggalak beach of Sanur, Bali has its own “ghost town”. It is a remote cast located quite far away from the center of Sanur Hub. You will soon find the remains and ruins of what once was designated to be the island’s theme park or Taman Festival bali. It only lasted a short while after meeting marketing and financial problems in 1997, and later on it became an abandoned government project. Up till now, there is no words on its reestablishment, making it compound of silent theme park in destructed shapes.

Everything is pretty much intact, with the main entrance, ticket booths, cafeterias, and empty buildings that are now in ruins. The whole place carries a rather creepy vibe as vines and shrubs grow untamed around its ornamental figures. This post-armageddon setting can somewhat bring uneasy nerves for visitors but still has the charms and mysterious beauty left.

Location: Jalan Padanggalak, Padanggalak Beach, Sanur

2. TRUNYAN NECROPOLIS

At Trunyan Necropolis, you will encounter something that is truly disturbing once you’ve arrived. It is located on the east of Batur Lake and may be reached using a boat from the other side. In the highlands of where the old Balinese villages are, lies an ancient community who still practices unusual and different ways with their deceased people. The Trunyan people do not believe in burying nor cremating their dead. Instead, the deceased are wrapped and transported by boat to a village graveyard and laid down among the ground where the giant trees stand. The bodies are then kept within a wooden cage to avoid them being destroyed or eaten by animals. The tree is known as taru menyan ( almost sound similar to the village’s name) exudes a certain fragrant aroma and is believed to only grown in that location only in whole of Bali island. It is quite a mystery as to how the odor of the bodies is almost non existing, which is probably believed to be cleansed away by the tree’s fragrance.

Location: Trunyan Village, Batur, Kintamani

3. GOA LAWAH, THE BAT CAVE TEMPLE

Goa Lawah is quite famous on its own account. It is one of Bali’s most important Balinese Hindu temples complete with its creepy cave entrance that is filled with bats. Regardless of the time of day, when one visits Goa Lawah whether at day or evening, the sight of these bats will surely give you a chill. This temple dates back to 11th century and is located enroute to Candidasa and east of Bali. Take a chance to visit this temple at dusk as the bats usually leave the cave and fly above the temple for a feast on insects. During the temple’s anniversary, Goa Lawah becomes a truly magnificent scene of an exotic temple with pilgrimage and local praying activities along with many colorful flags, parasols and banners. There is one unsolved mystery that is yet to be proven. It is whether the secret passage that leads to Besakih Temple just northeast of Mount Agung, is true or false.

Location: Jalan Raya Goa Lawah, Pesinggahan Village, Dawan District, Klungkung

4. BENGKALA, VILLAGE OF THE DEAF

The village of the deaf rings true to its name as over 2% of the population of Bengkala village are deaf since birth for over seven generations. Bengkala village is in the Kubutambahan district, located north of Bali and the deaf villagers are usually called “ kolok”. It actually refers to the sign language that is developed within the village or “kata kolok”. Cultural and traditional rituals such as dances, performance and martial art are still carried out but in their own special ways – deaf dances, dead martial art etc. All of these are done using distinct social system based on the belief in a deaf god, which all villagers look up to.

Location: Bengkala Village, Kubutambahan, Buleleng, North Bali

5. LOST PLANE #1

When you have arrived in Bali from the airport and heading towards Nusa Dua, pay attention on your left side as you go along Bypass Ngurah Rai. Right beside Dunkin Donuts or around 500m from the Benoa Square is a peculiar old white Boeing 737 aircraft. The plane is parked just so making it hard to comprehend as to why it is placed there. Many believe that it is just one of the marketing gimmicks by the restaurant owner, but some say that the plane fell through and now becomes a nice addition to the island.

Location: Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Jimbaran

6. LOST PLANE #2

Another mystery aircraft on the island is in quite a remote area right on the southern Bukit Peninsula, just a few kilometre north of Pandawa Beach. The exact location is a private property of a carved limestone hill. It has been one of the hot tourist sites open for public to explore and hangout in its restaurant and bar.

Location: Kutuh

7. GOA GALA-GALA UNDERGROUND HOUSE

Essentially an underground house, Goa Gala- Gala is a must visit when you are heading to Nusa Lembongan Island. This limestone house is well known for its labyrinth feature which connects the chambers in it. It is made by the owner – Made Byasa- who took inspiration from the Mahabharata epic in the episode where the protagonists made a cave hideout while dodging the persecution from the Koravas. This had then resulted into a passionate personal project for over a decade long, with completion in 1976. As soon as you enter 7 metre deep hole in the ground, you will soon appreciate how one man had succeeded in building all the rooms underground.

Location: Lembongan Village, West Nusa Lembongan Island

8. PI TAMAN REKREASI BEDUGUL ‘HAUNTED HOTEL’

All recreational places must have at least one haunted hotel. In Bali, it is once used to be a mountain resort in the early 1990’s but had to succumb to financial issue and came to a total halt just halfway through its project. The abandoned building is located on the central highland and is easily spotted during your trip to Beratan Lake or the Ulun Danu Temple. The ruins of P.I Taman Rekreasi Hotel & Resort has been deemed haunted for long and only a brave handful are willing to enter it. Abandoned for over 2 decades now, it is no wonder that the building rarely makes for a favorite place to visit for mainstream tours.

Location: Jalan Raya Baturiti, Batunya, Bedugul, Central Bali

9. GOA GONG (JIMBARAN)

Tucked away in the bustle of modern development of Jimbaran resort area is a hidden and unique cave temple, namely Goa Gong. It is located on the street paying homage to it, jalan Goa Goang, which is just up the hill from Bali’s top university : The Udayana. Take a left from the small Batu Ngongkong community and you will encounter 2 ornate red cat statues donned in chequered cloths. Usually this site is not open for public unless the keeper and supervisor is present onsite. This rather unwelcoming area is evident with the presence of gargoyles statues just right before its cave temple in the midst of banyan and tamarind trees. If you have a chance to get inside, the dimly-lit cave will reveal stone shrines under the dripping water of natural stalactites. A large stalactite can function as a stone gong, which is used for rituals and anniversary processions.

Location: Jalan Goa Gong, Jimbaran

10. GOA PETENG (JIMBARAN)

If cave walking or exploring is your thing, get to Goa Peteng which is right beside Ayana Resort and Spa in Jimbaran. Goa Peteng in local language literally is translated to ‘dark cave’ and true to form, it is almost pitch black as you walk into this limestone cave. Right at the cave entrance, there are shrine guards under a large Banyan tree to complete your whole goosebump experience. Decorated with shrubs and creeping vines down around its opening, you will soon be greeted with a rather dense atmosphere with bats welcoming you by their shrieks filling the hollow stalactite space. After a 15 minute descend into Goa Peteng, you will reach a freshwater pool at its base. Legend has it that on a full moon, a hidden chamber will be exposed through a causeway which is an extension of narrow passage on the water area.

It has long been established by many sources whether professional or personal opinions that Bali is one of the best travel destinations in the world. Although there are endless of articles giving you reasons why you should visit Bali, we thought that we can further bring home the whole idea of it. Here are 20 reasons why Bali can be the best island you can pick for going on the perfect holiday:

1. THE WELCOMING SIGHT OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT HIGHWAY IN INDONESIA WITH THE BACKGROUND OF MOUNT AGUNG.

Even before you land Bali, the island is generous enough to greet you with such breathtaking sight. Be sure not to sleep moments before landing. Open your window seat to witness the best tollway in Indonesia, the Bali Mandara Highway and the grand Mount Agung.

2. VIEW FROM THE TOP OF MOUNT AGUNG.

It is one thing to gaze at the mountain from the distance. Once you get on top of Mount Agung which is 3,142 metre in height, you’ll experience the different sensation being in the midst of Bali bird’s eye view.

3. THE AWESOME CALDERA OF MOUNT BATUR.

While it is only half the height of Mount Agung, Mount Batur mountain still boasts a height of 1,717 metre with equally stunning sight. It is also crowned as one of world’s Global Geopark by Unesco.

4. DOZENS OF GORGEOUS WATERFALLS.

Take one for example, this twin waterfall at the Village Sekumpul is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali. With height of 100 metre and placed among the lush forest and gorgeous greeneries, you will feel like you’ve been transported back in time, for good reasons.

5. ANOTHER BECKONING WATERFALL

At Aling Aling waterfall, you get to play alongside with nature by jumping from its height to the pool down below. It is extreme enough although the height is still tolerable with a natural slide for you to explore. The sensation of crashing into fresh water is of course, indescribable.

6. THE HIDDEN BEACH “ GREEN BOWL BEACH”

Located at Ungasan, this is still one of the most rarely visited beach in the whole of Bali. You will have to put some effort by climbing the long and steep stairs, but it will be all worth it in the end.

7. MORE HIDDEN PLACES FOR YOU TO EXPLORE AT PASIH UWUG

The further you are willing to explore, the more beauty you will encounter. Take Pasih Uwug for example, it is located in the southeast Bali at Nusa Penida where it has the most stunning natural water dam for you to enjoy.

8. MORE FOR YOU AT NUSA PENIDA

This part of Bali still offers you countless amazing experience of nature’s best. Try diving at its sea and you’ll meet the wonderful sea creatures including the rare Mola Mola fish that is 3- 4 metre in length!

9. GET A TASTE OF GIGANTIC TREE

The Bunut Bolong tree is over a century old and is located at the Jembrana area. Legend told that everyone who had tried cutting it down in the past had met a rather deadly end. Ever since then, this awesome tree has been preserved by leaving a 5 meter hole for allowing cars and pedestrians to walk through.

10. THE PERFECT DAREDEVIL PLAYGROUND

Each spot in Bali is unique and special in its own way. Since Bali is quite a large island, every place is guaranteed to bring you different cultural experience and historical moments. If you are a family with kids, a young backpacker, or a couple on a honeymoon, Bali has a piece of something for everyone. All you need to know is simply where to look:

KUTA

Probably the one place that most foreigners know in Bali is Kuta. It was once a small fishing village with locals living in huts and rather unkempt surrounding. However, just in a short few decades, Kuta has reached its height of being one of the most popular spots in all of Bali. Kuta is now currently very well-kept with modern infrastructures and entertainments. Everywhere you look, you will see rows of shopping area, cafes and night clubs. Despite its popularity, Kuta still offers some very affordable rooms for rent as low as US 15 and delicious meals from USD 3 suitable for most travellers.

The beaches in Kuta is packed with sunbeds, souvenir shops and beginner surfers. The nightlife is also one of the most lively in Bali. Mostly are located in the main street – Legian with open bars and restaurants along the way. The beach street is called Jalan Pantai Kuta while the small streets are named Poppies with lots of bookstores, homestays and places to eat.

SEMINYAK

For the high-end and lavish scene of Bali, Seminyak is the place to be. With rows of fancy restaurants, world-class cuisines, luxurious villas, and upscale nightclubs, Seminyak is filled with affluent type of people from all over the world. When you have enough of local food, Seminyak is ready to charm you with plenty of its different options. Famous chefs are known to stay in this area while managing something of their own here.

Needless to say, Seminyak is more expensive than Kuta. Dinner starts from USD 10 and can go as high as possible in the more expensive ones. While staying in the villas or hotels will set your back from USD 200-250/ night at least.

The beach is rather well-kept and not as packed with nightclubs speckled along it. The nightlife here is vibrant and rich with flows of cocktails and high-end menu. The main street is called DoubleSix and there are also others that are newer and more upscale such as Oberoi, Laksamana and Petitenget.

CANGGU

Canggu is most popular for expats who have chosen to settle down here. It is quite big with beautiful sceneries of rice fields, small villages and small roads with sandy beaches. Expats love it for the simple and easy natural lifestyle in this area. Although quite laidback and deemed as the simpler part of Bali, it still offers restaurants, small shops and everything you hope to find in a well-developed rural area. There are variety of hotels and eateries here that can cater to all levels and lifestyles of most. Surfers also love the beach breaks here.

Compared to Seminyak, Canggu is slightly more affordable but still is above Kuta price range. There are a lot of villas and private houses for longer stay with medium budget. There isn’t much nightlife in this area, so people still flood to Seminyak in the evening.

It is rather hard to travel in Canggu if you don’t have your own ride. The traffic can be quite bad at times with the main street packed as well as others. The main road is called Jalan Raya Kerobokan and Jalan Raya Canggu. There are also Umalas, Banjar Anyar, Batu Bolong etc that are quite popular too.

UNGASAN (BUKIT)

Ungasan (Bukit) is especially loved by professional surfer. It poses more challenging waves to surf, although there are not many restaurants such as Seminyak or Canggu. The scenery here is also not quite as favorable as other places. Prices for food here can be quite expensive, perhaps because of the lack of choices. Whereas, there isn’t any nightlife to enjoy here compared to Seminyak or Kuta.

People who are looking for peaceful time will enjoy Bukit because of its village setting. Surrounded by cliffs and white sand beaches, the tranquility in this area is very apparent. You must definitely get your own ride because this area is very spread out.

Some of the world’s best surf breaks can be found in Bukit such as Uluwatu and Padang Padang. There are also other breathtaking beaches such as Greenbowl and Balangan. The price range is almost similar to Kuta with lodging starting from USD 15 per night.

SANUR

Sanur is considered as the oldest resort area of Bali. When Kuta was still at is starting point, Sanur was already well-established with its fancy hotels and high-end tourist crowds from all over the world. Sanur viba is mostly relaxing and very chilled out, but more suitable for family with kids or elderly tourists.

The beaches here are very serene too with few waves and a lot of sunbeds for doing lounging activity. It is still cheaper than Seminyak, but can be more expensive than Kuta. Accomodations here are mostly 3 to 5 stars hotel with prices starting from USD 90 per night.

There isn’t much night life here, but there are some restaurants that have live musics to entertain the guests. Walking or bicycling is common here, but motorbike and taxi are also easy to attain.

NUSA DUA (BENOA)

This is where the hotels with beach access and inclusive package options, which is why large group of tourists love it here. The beaches here are particularly beautiful with crystal clear water that are suitable for sun-tanning and swimming activity. The famous beaches here are the Geger Beach and Nikko.

Some may find Nusa Dua overpriced and rather boring, but the hotels here are definitely something worth trying here. If you are into cultural and traditional Bali, Nusa Dua is not really the place for that. However, if you are looking for international hotels then Nusa Dua is just where to be.

JIMBARAN

Jimbaran is not exactly a tourist area because a lot of local fishermen activities take place in the village. There is a good mix of locals and expats here, where visitors can stay in a few hotels in the Jimbaran Bay. Other than staying here and heading out to more popular spots, there isn’t much to do here.

Jimbaran can be quite cheap especially if you prefer local food. The beach here is a long stretch of beach that is suitable for swimming. The best thing about Jimbaran is the seafood restaurants that are lined along Jimbaran Bay. They are open around sunset and have the best grill and BBQ options among others.

When is the best time to travel to Bali? When to visit Bali? It’s a a question we hear frequently along with What is the best time to travel to Bali? or When should I visit Bali?. This question is typically followed by What’s the weather like in Bali?

Bali is typically sunny during the day and gets balmy at nights. With warm and humid weather, the average temperature in Bali ranges between 26-31 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The dry season lasts from May to September where you will enjoy a tropical and sunny day. Whereas, the rainy season lasts between October to April with different level of precipitation levels and downpours.

Season-wise, Bali makes for the perfect all year-round travel destination. With plenty of favorite hotspots, Bali is a haven for sightseeing tours where endless of good places and things to see await for its tourists. Be it the hottest months or cooler ones, travellers still can enjoy their leisurely activities such as lounging in the sound or simply indulge in the richness of its culture and festivities. Most traditional festivals usually take place mid-year.

Best Time to visit Bali

The lowest levels of humidity in Bali are between May and August. This is when you get to enjoy cool breezes by day with fairly low temperature at night. These periods are good for long stays and sightseeing excursions. As the air gets pleasantly humid, tourists get to enjoy outdoor activities and overland tours without having to fear of overheating.

The famous kite season in Bali usually takes place sometime between June and August, or the so called the windy season. Not only that, many other cultural festivals also take advantage of this ideal season such as the annual Bali Arts Festival. The clear blue sky is at its best, many photo sessions see this as the perfect time as well.

Low and Peak Season in Bali

While Bali is great to visit all year round with its stream and traffic of visitors, the common peak season is around Christmas and New Year ( late December to early January). The other peak season linked to dry season is between early July to late September.

Hotel bookings are usually at their lowest following the New Year, and from October through November. With lower rates, these hotels also offer many various promos and benefits for guests to enjoy. On road travel will also be more favorable with fewer traffic jams and quieter roads.

Sunniest Time in Bali

If suntanning is one of your reasons to visit Bali, lazing on the beach under the tropical sun is best done in drier months between May and August. These are the times where Bali is sunniest starting from sunrise at around 5.50 – 6.25 am and sunset between 6.15- 6.45 pm. It will get more humid at the start of the dry season as humidity level reaches up to 75%, especially in the lower coastal area.

Some prefer to get to Bali’s cooler highlands with average daytime temperature of 21- 27 degree Celsius and drops quite significantly as the night approaches.

Wet Season in Bali

The wet season starts around October and can last through to April. Most of the downpours happen between late December to February. If you plan to hit the beach, you may get a little bit disappointed as its popular beach such as Kuta, Legian and Seminyak may tend to be filled with debris. These remains are mostly washed ashore from East Java causing the south-western’s beaches to be less pleasant for sightseeing. But fret not, Sanur, Candidasa and Nusa Dua will still be as charming as ever since they are only minimally affected by the downpour and winds.

All year-round of fun!

Basically, anytime or any season is still ideal for most leisure activities. However, it is important to note that outdoor photography and some overland excursions might be encountered with showers and grey skies. But other than that, Bali is still one of the most ideal places to visit regardless of its weather.

During rainy seasons can sometime be a surfer’s best playground and paradise, just as fun and entertaining as the dry season. Bottom line is, Bali weather will not let you down. The beaches and gorgeous sceneries are there to stay, with its genuinely warm and kind-hearted Bali people. In Bali, you will always be up for many wonderful adventures, all year-round.
