The Gunung Kawi temple is one of the tourist attractions in Bali that’s very fascinating and interesting to visit. In this complex, you can see ancient heritage, which are the carved temples in a cliff wall. That’s is why this temple is called as the Gunung Kawi temple. This tourist attraction object is located in the Pekerisan river, Penaka village, Tampaksiring district, Gianyar regency, Bali.
The name of Gunung Kawi is the same with the Gunung Kawi in Java island, but it is said that the Gunung word means a mountain or higher place and the Kawi word means carving. Overall, the name of Gunung Kawi means carvings placed in a higher cliff.

Beside as a tourist attraction, the Gunung Kawi temples also have an ancient history value which was found in 1910. When it was found for the first time, the temple was located on the Pakerisan river stream that divide this complex into 2 parts. To reach to this temple, you must first walk down the stairs with around 320 steps, because the location of the temple is in the valley of the river. While walking down the stairs, you’ll be presented with beautiful view and when you reach the valley of the river, you will see the historical value from the carving at the cliff of the Gunung Kawi.
The complex of the Gunung Kawi temple was divided into 4 parts which are:
- The east side consist of 5 temples that were the shrine for the holy spirit of King Udayana and his Queen and children
- The west side consist of 4 temples that were the shrine for the 4 mistresses of King Udayana
- The south side consist of a temple (the tenth temple) which is a monastery and niche
- The fourth side is the building of a temple functioned as a place for meditation.

To get to this Gunung Kawi temple, it is suggested that you bring your own car or rent a car in Bali since there is no public transportation toward this tourist attraction. When you use your own vehicle, you don’t need to get lost since there are so many signs along the road toward the Gunung Kawi temple that indicate the direction of the temple. You can also rent a car, complete with its driver so you just need to sit back and relax and also enjoy the view along the way. Well, have a nice trip!
